Celebration of the first centenary of the death of Sir Thomas Hanbury (1832 - 1907)
The University of Genova organizes in collaboration with the Association Hanbury Botanic Gardens Friends the celebration of the first centenary of the death of Sir Thomas Hanbury, with the meeting "Acclimatization, global change, gardening and biodiversity conservation" that will be held in Ventimiglia and Genova from 8th to 11th May 2007.
The scientific program will focus on four issues:
- Role and Evolution of the Botanic Gardens
- Botanic Gardens and Biodiversity Conservation
- Global Change and Horticulture
- Plant Conservation and Phytogeography.
The Meeting deals with the comparison between the Botanic Gardens and the world scientific institutions on issues like climate change, plant acclimatization, and role of the botanic gardens in the ex situ conservation of vegetal diversity. Experts in the field from all over the world will take part in the event, representing the major institutions in this field (Botanic Gardens Conservation International, Royal Horticulture Society, PACLab - Photosynthesis and Atmospheric Change Laboratory, Institut Méditerranéen dEcologie et Paléoécologie). The main aim of the meeting is to suggest a debate within the scientific community on the specific nature of the botanic gardens as far as conservation and their future role are concerned.
