Atlante del Patrimonio Naturale e Culturale/Atlas du patrimoine naturel et culturel
A belt between the Mediterranean and the Alps, a passage and meeting
place, a territory housing a great variety of animal species, many of
them rare, and 2,500 botanical species including about forty endemic
species: Argentera - Mercantour massif represents a place of
extraordinary naturalistic and historical-cultural value. Situated at
the south-western edge of the Alpine chain, it is protected on the
French slope by Parc national du Mercantour and on the Italian slope by
Alpi Marittime Nature Park: altogether, almost 100,000 hectares of
protected nature.
Men have been living in these mountains since
prehistory, as witnessed by the 36,000 rock engravings dating back to
the Copper and Bronze Age we can admire in Valle delle Meraviglie and
Valle di Fontanalba, and the two slopes of the southern Alps have been
characterized over the centuries by very similar lifestyles, custom,
and traditions - the base of the common identity of Marittime -
Mercantour area.
This transfrontier atlas Alpi Marittime - Mercantour, a document
prepared for the nomination to Unesco World Heritage Site, represents
first of all a useful instrument for those who want to commit
themselves, together with the two Parks, to the conservation and
enhancement of an extraordinary alpine environment.
