The ancient Roman Navalia, providing wood for boats, then called Varagine in the medieval era for its beach suitable for launching ship, now is seat of a modern tourist harbour surrounded by rocks and cluster pines.
The history of Varazze can be read in the medieval bastions and in the ruins of the Romanesque church of Sant'Ambrogio, in the news S. Ambrogio (XVI), in the church of SS. Nazario e Celso with the geometrical drawing of its square made of small pebbles called "risseu".
From the city center heading east along the coast winds a level promenade and a long cycle path, partly inside the tunnels once used by trains, among clusters of broom, beeches, tiny rocky beaches, the Castle of the Invrea family and the perfumed Mediterranean shrub.
Varazze is a famous seaside resort, with long sandy beaches and lidos; surf lovers here can find the perfect waves.
