Mackerel is one of the oily fish present in the Po Delta area. Of medium size, it generally feeds on small fish such as anchovies and sardines. In spring, after breeding, it approaches the coasts. It has a tapered, hydrodynamic body of a metallic blue colour on the back, silvery white on the belly, with dark stripes on the back and on the sides. It is caught mainly at night with purse seine and light sources. It is also fished with gillnets, pelagic trawls and easily catches the lines of sport fishermen. It has delicate white meats, highly appreciated both fresh and preserved in salt.
