Etna DOC is the first wine becoming the symbol of the Province of Catania and has been the first wine to obtain the DOC label in August 1968. It includes Red, Rosé, White, and Superior White wine. The vines used are all autochthonous, and are 80% Nerello mascalese and Cappuccio for red wines; 60% Carricante and 40% Catarratto for white wines, while superior white wine is produced with 80% Carricante.
The producers of Etna DOC wine are about 600 for a total production of about 15 thousand hectoliters, out of which almost the 85% is represented by red and rosé wines.
The Park Authority, aiming at the integration between environmental protection and promotion of the economic activities, safeguards and promotes Etna wine growing as "invaluable inherited heritage" to safeguard, enhance, and promote, as well as an economic sector of primary importance. This aim can be achieved through the safeguard of the Etna environmental and cultural heritage, the improvement and stabilization of the production quality parameters, and the promotion of the product image linked to its territory.
