The solemn nobility deriving from the monumental cubic shape, along with the slightly melancholic atmosphere of the place, seems to confirm the tradition according to which the villa was built in the late 15th century by Caterina Cornaro, the unhappy queen of Cyprus, to give it as a present to Fiammetta, her favorite damsel. Its importance lies in the fact that it is one of the first examples following the model of the gothic venetian palace, with square plan divided into three sections and with central halls.
