Situated along Valnerina, between the ancient towns of Arrone and
Casteldilago, San Francesco medieval monastery is presented today to
the readers and estimators of the beauties of Umbria through the
monographic work published by Edizioni Thyrus from Arrone: "La Chiesa e
il Convento di San Francesco di Arrone-Casteldilago. Storia,
Architettura, Decorazione" (
The Church and Monastery of San Francesco in Arrone-Casteldilago. History, Architecture, Decoration.)
Always an object of dispute and a meeting place for the two
communities, the structure is analyzed from three different points of
view by authors with different competences.
Mario Petralla, an expert of local history with a passion for
archive-keeping, has traced back its vicissitudes from the study of
works by the main Franciscan historians; the Architect Miro Virili has
analyzed the changes it underwent over the centuries until its present
aspect; the Art Historian Giovanna Sapori has illustrated the
iconography of the present and past frescoes and decorations of the
buildings.
Although history has not avoided divisions, transfers, reconversion works,
and even a long state of abandonment, San Francesco monastery has
become again a strategic reference point for the surrounding territory
thanks to important renovation works and activities carried out by River Nera Park
, whose offices are situated in the structure.
