Shrine to the Fallen of Marzabotto

The Shrine to the Fallen of Marzabotto was completed in 1961. Outside there are a number of commemorative plaques remembering the atrocities of the Second World War and of more recent times. They accompany the images of a part of the fallen from the towns of Marzabotto, Monzuno and Grizzana. Many of these victims were laid to rest inside the building, with plaques indicating their names and ages, and, in part, divided according to the location of the carnage. Four plaques commemorate the gold medals conferred upon Father Giovanni Fornasini, Francesco Calzolari, Mario Musolesi and Gastone Rossi. Other memorial plates pay tribute to the unnamed or unidentified victims. Throughout the building there are works by artist Stella Angelini, including a painting around the altar, a triptych in gold foil and eight bronze statues, symbolizing the tragic moments and the people's sentiment regarding the war, the massacres and the partisan movement.
