Inhabited for centuries by the Benedictine nuns, St John Monastery is situated in the nearby Swiss town of Müstair, in the Grisons canton, at about 2 km from Tubre. Its church houses the biggest painting cycle of the early Middle Ages characterized by Carolingian and Romanesque-style paintings. The Carolingian sculpture representing Charlemagne is very precious. Evidence of the flourishing of Christianity around the year 800, it was declared UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. The annexed museum enables visitors to carry out a journey in the 1,200 years of history of the monastery.
