The first evidence of settlement was found in a necropolis dating from between the 2nd century B.C. and the 1st century A.D.; the burial graves are attributed to the Leopontic civilisation, that inhabited the area at that time. Later, around 1,300, Ornavasso was colonised by German-speaking Swiss-Walser populations who came down from the mountains and settled in the village for several centuries. The customs and traditions of these people disappeared only during the 19th century, leaving remarkable signs in the places' toponymy.
