The town has always been the political and religious centre of the Vigezzo Valley. It was the seat of the Mandamento, that is the seat on which the Valley Magistrate exercises his jurisdiction, and of the Church from which, little by little, the other countries detached themselves, erecting local parishes. It was inhabited by seven important Caraveggesi families who divided the town into neighborhoods, some of which are still recognizable.
