Azioni di monitoraggio e di habitat Management delle popolazioni di anfibi minacciate
A project for the amphibians of the Park Amphibians represent a fundamental element of the natural trophic networks, they supply food to predators and represent the main controls for a large number of invertebrates, even of agronomic interest. A third of the world's amphibian species are threatened because of six main factors: the habitat loss; the alien species; the excessive capture; pollution; climate change; UV radiations; infectious diseases.
Such threats are damaging Italy's amphibian populations, and the results of the long-term monitoring become always more worrying.
The BATRACOFAUNA project of the Sirente-Velino Regional Nature Park - a wide karst area lacking in superficial water phenomena - concerned localized amphibian populations. This project led to the creation of a network of suitable environments situated at a distance which is not bigger than that of possible scattering of the Italian crested newt, the symbol of the Park. The aim of the project is to enrich biodiversity and the territory as well. Another aim is to contribute, also thank to this book, to the spread of the knowledge of the several amphibian species and of the need to safeguard their habitat.
