Protected Areas in Argentina
The Administration of National Parks is the body entrusted by the State to protect, enhance, and open to the world the natural and cultural heritage of Argentina.
The areas managed by this body are part of the Protected Areas National System, created in 1934 with the Act 12.103, the establishment act of the present system.
This act was replaced in 1972 by the act 18.594 - which led to the definition of the current management categories - and today the system is regulated by the National Act 22.351.

At the moment, the Protected Areas National System is formed by four species which have been declared Natural Monuments and 33 protected areas - for a total of 3,584,414 hectares – scattered in most of the Argentinian provinces.

The main aims of the Administration are:

  • preserving biodiversity and ecosystems
  • preserving cultural diversity
  • safeguarding the habitat of the endangered species
  • promoting educational and recreational activities
  • promoting research
  • protecting paleontological sites.
