Protected Areas in Croatia
According to the Protected Natural Values Register of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia (as at 15th July 2005) a total of 444 parts of nature are protected under 8 categories. At the moment there is no area protected under the category Regional Park. Late in August 2005 the Ministry of Culture issued the first ruling on the preventive protection under the Nature Park category relating to the Lastovo archipelago for the period of 3 years.
Protected areas of Croatia (including the Lastovo Archipelago Nature Park under the preventive protection) cover an area of a total of 532,063.35 hectares, i.e. 6.07% of the total area of Croatia or 9.40% of the mainland area of Croatia. The major part of this area is protected under the categories of Nature Park (61.17%) and National Park (17.51%).
The Velebit Nature Park is the Croatia's largest protected area and together with the Northern Velebit and Paklenica National Parks makes almost 40% of the protected territory of the Republic of Croatia.
The oldest protected area of the Republic of Croatia is the Opeka Arboretum in the County Varazdinska, protected since 1947 in the category of the monument of park architecture.
International Recognition
Certain areas of outstanding value for the biological and landscape diversity of the Republic of Croatia enjoy international legal protection. The Plitvice Lakes National Park has been included in the UNESCO World Natural Heritage List. The Ramsar List of the Convention on Wetlands contains Kopacki rit and Lonjsko polje nature parks as wetland habitats of international importance, the Crna mlaka fishponds as a special ornithological reserve and the Lower Neretva. The Velebit Mountain belongs to the UNESCO world network of biosphere reserves within the framework of the Man and Biosphere scientific programme.
