Die Schutzgebiete in Indien
Um Informationen über nationale Wildlifereserven und Schutzgebiete optimal verbreiten zu können, wurde im September 1997 von der MoEF (Ministry of Environment and Forests) das Wildlife Institute of India zum 23. Umweltinformationssystemzentrum Indiens erklärt. Als primäres Thema wurde "Wildlife and Protected Areas" genannt. Das Zentrum befasst sich mit allen Themen, die "Wildlife" und "Protected Areas" betreffen.
Das World Bank Program des ENVIS will ausserdem eine Datenbank über die verschiedenen Umweltbereiche erstellen. Nationalparks
Es gibt in Indien 95 Nationalparks, die insgesamt eine Fläche von 38,024.10 km2 decken, was 1.16% der geographischen Landesfläche (siehe National Wildlife Database, Oktober 2005) darstellt. Zu den bereits genannten Parks kommen noch 74 Nationalparks hinzu, die eine Fläche von 16,630.08 km2 decken. Sie werden im Protected Area Network Report (Rodgers et al. 2002) angesprochen. Das Netzwerk wird zukünftig bis zu 169 Parks umfassen. Die meisten davon messen jeweils 100-500 km,2 und 7 von ihnen haben über 5,000 km2 Fläche.
Wildlifereserven
Es gibt in Indien 500 Wildreserven, die eine Fläche von 117,913.45 km2, also 3.59% des Landes (siehe National Wildlife Database, Oktober 2005) decken. Weitere 217 Reserven werden im Protected Area Network Report angesprochen. Sie decken 16,669.44 km2 Fläche. Die meisten Reserven messen unter 10 km2 und nur 2 Reserven über 5,000 km2. Das Netzwerk wird zukünftig bis zu 717 Wildlifereserven umfassen.
Projekt Tiger
Das Projekt "Tiger" begann im Jahr 1973 auf Wunsch der indischen Regierung, um die gefährdeten Tigerarten des Landes retten zu können. Das Projekt begann 1973-74 mit neun Reserven und endete im Jahr 2006 mit 29 Reserven. Insgesamt decken die Tigerschutzgebiete 38,620 km2, was 1.17% der Landesfläche bedeutet.
Biosphärenreservate
Das Programm der Biosphärenreservate wurde im Jahr 1971 durch das "Man & Biosphere" (MAB) Programm der UNESCO geboren. Ziel hierbei ist, vor Ort alle Lebensformen zu bewahren. Die weltweit erste Reserve dieser Art wurde 1979 gegründet. Seither hat sich das Netzwerk um 425 Reserven in 95 Ländern der Welt (MAB, 2003) erweitert. Zur Zeit gibt es in Indien 14 von diesen Reserven.
