Protected Areas in Mexico
Protected Areas represent in Mexico the most important instrument of environmental policy from a juridical point of view, as far as the conservation of biodiversity is concerned. They are land or aquatic areas of the national territory representing the various ecosystems, in which the original environment has not been altered and which generate increasingly recognized and enhanced ecological benefits. They are established through a presidential decree and the activities that can be carried out within their territory are settled by the "Ley General del Equilibrio Ecológico y Protección al Ambiente" (General Law on Ecological Balance and Protection of the Environment). They are subject to special protection, conservation, recovery, and development regimes, according to the categories established by the Law.
The National Commission of Protected Areas manages at the moment 164 federal natural areas covering an area of over 23 millions of hectares. National Parks
Areas with one or more ecosystems important for their landscape beauty, their scientific, educational, and recreational value, their historical value, the presence of flora and fauna, their aptitude towards the development of tourism, or for other similar reasons of general interest.
Biosphere Reserves
Areas representing one or more ecosystems which have not been altered by the human action or which require protection and recovery measures. They house representative species of the national biodiversity, among which endemic and endangered species.
Natural Monuments
Areas characterized by one or more natural elements and for which, given their unique features and aesthetic, historical or scientific value, it has been decided to adopt a strict protection regime. They are not characterized by a great variety of ecosystems nor by the necessary extension to belong to the other management categories.
Safeguard Areas of Natural Resources
Areas designated to safeguard and protect the soil, hydrographic basins, waters, and natural resources in general, situated in forest areas.
Safeguard Areas of Flora and Fauna
Areas established according to the general rules fixed by LGEEPA and other laws that can be enforced in areas characterized by habitats on the conservation of which the existence, transformation, and development of wild species of flora and fauna depend.
Nature Sanctuaries
Protected areas characterized by a considerable richness in flora or fauna or by the presence of limited subspecies or distribution areas. They include gorges, fertile plains, caves, caverns, or other topographical or geographical units to safeguard.
