Protected Areas in Sao Tome and Principe
In Part I, article 10 of the Constitution of the Republic of Sao Tome and Principe, among the main objectives of the State there is the conservation of the natural and environmental balance of the islands.
According to the 1992 Review of National Systems by UNEP-WCMC, legislation on the conservation and exploitation of forests, the creation of protected areas, and the protection and management of fauna and wild flora had not yet been passed at that time, and needed to be established urgently.
Since then, a National Park, two Cloud Forest Sites, and some Ecological Zones have been established to manage the precious nature of Sao Tome and Principe.
In terms of their conservation value for birds alone (the most numerous and important group of terrestrial vertebrates), the islands rank second in importance among a list of 75 forests in the whole of Africa.
