The reserve is made up of the peat bog called Paluda la Lot and of the surrounding reliefs. It is a typical "transition" peat bog which originated as a consequence of the filling of a pre-existing lake basin. This ancient lake occupied a hollow dug among the porphyritic bumps of the Cembra Valley by the glaciers of the most recent Ice Age.
