The ZSC Monti Dimon e Paularo plays an important role in the Natura 2000 network of Friuli Venezia Giulia because it identifies a mountainous system of siliceous substrate with summits over 2000 meters above sea level. Habitats and species typical of acid or weakly acid soils and two small alpine lake systems are therefore present. The site offers areas of a certain relevance for the survival of the regional populations of black grouse (Tetrao tetrix) and there are also wetlands that, given the altitude, assume a certain relevance from a conservation point of view, and which are suitable for the possible reproduction of the yellow-bellied toad (Bombina variegata).
