The ZSC Creta di Aip e Sella di Lanza plays a particularly important role in the Natura 2000 network of Friuli Venezia Giulia because it includes most of the alpine habitats of both carbonatic and non-carbonatic substrates, many in good condition. Important is also its system of alpine and subalpine peat bogs. There are two flora species and one of them (Eryngium alpinum) is quite rare in the regional territory. The contribution of this site to the network is represented by the presence of considerable high mountainous massifs (on a regional scale), constituting one of the last reproductive sites for the white partridge (Lagopus mutus) and the black grouse (Tetrao tetrix). This land includes also a significant portion of the regional Carnic Alps and therefore constitutes an important part of the entire Italian and Austrian Natura 2000 network.
