The site corresponds to the area where the rivers Torre and Natisone, the Isonzo inlets, meet, forming a large area of fluvial relevance and subject to free hydraulic evolution. The ZSC plays an important ecological role due to its particular location in the region. The river system, in its longitudinal development from north to south, actually connects the Julian Prealps to the Adriatic coast. Moreover, among the regional ZSC with the same features, it is the one at a lower altitude. It is also by the sea, thus its vegetation has even more distinctly arid and thermophilic connotations. Finally, it is the easternmost point and its vegetation is affected by the Trieste plateau proximity, presenting therefore common aspects with the karst moor.
