Loc. La Mortola
Herbarium: 26,100 samples
The herbarium was established by Sir Thomas Hanbury in the 1890s when the Gardens, realized since 1867, already existed. The inauguration of the facilities with the library and the herbarium occurred in September 1892 (see Berger, 1912), and it was boosted in the following years thanks to Gustave Cronemeyer, Kurt Dinter and especially Alwin Berger.
Thomas Hanbury made a facility called Casa Rustica be built to house, among other things, the herbarium, which was subjected to serious damages during World War II. In the following years the lack of any care damaged the collections. After 1987 the Gardens became property of the University of Genoa and thus the original location was renovated.
