Maremmana cow breed has characterized for centuries the marshy environment of Maremma Laziale. Cattle breeding takes place in a wild state. The so-called "buttero" (cowboy) has to move, separate, and control Maremmana cows and, once a year, has to gather the young calves for the branding, the essential mark to recognize them when they will freely graze in the meadows.
