If compared to Classico, Verdicchio dei Castelli di
Jesi does not present variations in composition, color, and alcoholic content. The difference mainly lies in the geographical production area, since it
is cultivated more in the north, as well as in the nature
of the soil, in the microclimate, and in the insolation which can
influence its taste. Verdicchio grapes are autochthonous of the
central Marches: there are no other regions with the same kind of
grapes. Besides the traditional Castelli di Jesi, Classico,
and Spumante, in the 1995 specifications also Riserva, Classico Riserva, Classico Superiore, and Passito have
been introduced.
The production area includes most of the hilly
territory of the Province of Ancona with its center in the Castles of
Jesi, and extends up to Misa and
Nevola valleys, including part of the Municipalities of Ostra and Senigallia. The designation Classico is reserved to Verdicchio produced in
the most ancient original area crossed by the river Esino. Some limited
territories in the Province of Macerata are also interested by this
kind of production.
