Carimate is known for its castle, the scene of many conflicts and battles.
Today's castle dates back to 1345; it was built on the remains of an ancient building from 1149, erected in a strategic position on the road connecting Milan to Como and Switzerland. The 13th century was characterised by armed conflicts between Como and Milan, competing for the hegemony over the textile industry in the Po Valley. The Castle of Carimate was located on the road connecting the two towns and was therefore considered as an ideal position to defend Milan. Not surprisingly, the structure dated back to 1149 was destroyed during these conflicts.
