Saffron in the area of Orvieto
Within the initiatives for the enhancement of the characteristic local products, Monte Peglia e Selva di Meana Mountain Community has decided to re-introduce an ancient local cultivation: saffron. The measure, with demonstration and information purposes on the cultivation methods and possibilities of development of this essence, has been implemented with the planting of 4,500 bulbs of Crocus sativus L. in loc. Parco dei Setti Frati. This perennial plant belonging to the Iridaceae family had been cultivated in the area since the 16th century, as witnessed by the statutes of the Municipalities of Allerona and Parrano (these documents, dating back to the mid 16th century, refer to sanctions for the damages to the saffron cultivations) and was mainly used in cooking.
