From the spring Fonte della Bulgarella, next to the centre of Spello, take the narrow tarmac road winding through the olive groves; it soon becomes an unsurfaced road, not passable by car, from which you can enjoy a beautiful view over the small city. Go uphill for about 1.5 km, as far as the first fork, where you turn left. After a few metres, at the other fork, turn right and then keep walking on the same trail – n. 50 –; after Poggio Caselle, go on through the woods for less than 4 km, until you get at the spring Fonte Bregno. Take trail 60, walk round the edge of the meadow on top of Mount Subasio towards Madonna della Spella (978 m a.s.l.). The date of building of this sanctuary, 1080 A.D., is carved on a brick at the entrance; its name, "Spella", comes from the Latin specula, i.e. view, and is due to its wonderful location, which overlooks the Umbrian Valley and the Sibillini Mountains; when the sky is particularly clear you can even see the major mountain massifs of the whole centre of Italy. Walk the same trail back to reach the starting point.
