The Dolomites World Heritage
Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park, together with other sections of the Dolomites of Belluno, Trento, Bolzano, Udine, and Pordenone, has become World Heritage
(26 Jun 09) Today in Seville, UNESCO has decided the inclusion of the Dolomites in the World Heritage List.
This recognition crowns a long route and confirms the extraordinary landscape and naturalistic value of the "most beautiful mountains of the world".
The area declared World Heritage does not include all the Dolomites but it closely follows the perimeter of the already existing protected areas and Sites of Community Importance of the Dolomites, since UNESCO requires specific assurances as far as the safeguard of the areas declared World Heritage is concerned.
Also thanks to the presence and the work of the Parks it has been possible to comply with the three main principles required by UNESCO.
a. the adoption of a general policy aiming at granting the cultural and natural heritage a strategic function in the general welfare and the integration of the protection of this heritage in the general planning: this aspect is performed by the planning instruments of the Parks
b. the creation in the territory of one or more protection, preservation, and enhancement services of the cultural and natural heritage, provided with specialized staff having the necessary means to fulfill the tasks it has been entrusted to: the Park Authorities were born exactly to carry out these functions of protection and surveillance required by UNESCO
c. the development of studies and scientific research activities to improve the measures enabling a State to cope with the dangers threatening its own cultural or natural heritage: the scientific research activities are part of the establishment goals of the Parks which carry out monitoring and census activities, as well as scientific studies to improve the knowledge of the heritage they must protect.
