Lunigiana's PDO Honey
The Lunigiana's honey has been the first Italian honey which has been awarded the PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) certification by the European Union, the highest recognition of the products' typicalness. The territory includes Lunigiana's 14 municipalities, whose typically mountain landscape has a varied vegetation with a marked presence of acacia and chestnut forests, very precious essences from the bee-keeping point of view. This fact, combined with a tradition dating from the late 1400 and with the low level of industrialization, determines in the Lunigiana region an ideal environment to carry out high quality bee-keeping activities with acacia and chestnut honey productions having excellent chemical-physical and organoleptic features.
