The Biosphere Reserve “Somma-Vesuvio and Miglio d'Oro” includes the territory of the Vesuvius National Park and the surrounding coastal strip, with the area of Pompeii and the Vesuvian villas of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, located along the so-called “Miglio d'Oro”, which alone constitute an architectural heritage of exceptional value. The Reserve was included in October 1997 into the network of World Biosphere Reserves, envisaged in the UNESCO "Man and the Biosphere - MAB" program, in the "cultural landscape" typology, which distinguishes territories for the aggregating and permeating force of the natural element in comparisons of religious, artistic and cultural phenomena.
