As all the places which were in the past royal hunting reserves, Ficuzza has been always preserved for very different purposes than the present ones: game and woodlands belonged to the king, and were preserved for the king.

The most significant environment from an ecological point of view is the rocky environment which, because of the difficult conditions of the high mountain, is characterized by considerable temperature ranges between day and night and by strong winds drying up the soils.

The woodland is the realm of the Blue Tit, the Great Tit, and of a myriad of other birds, of the Hoopoe, the Jay, the Blackbird, the Black Kite, the insectivorous birds like the Short-toed Treecreeper and the Great Spotted Woodpecker, and again the Red Kite moving between the grasslands and the wood.
