The Ghirardi Nature Reserve was established by the Regional Council in December 2010. It includes the southwestern part of the Province of Parma and covers the territory of the municipalities of Albareto and Borgo Val di Taro.
With an altitude between 478 and 693 m above the sea level and a surface of about 370 ha, it lies within the larger WWF Oasis of the same name. Since 2010 the Reserve has been managed by the province of Parma, with the participation, through an agreement, of WWF. Since 2013 the Region has transferred its authority to the newly established Management Body for the Parks and the Biodiversity of Western Emilia, which has kept the agreement with the WWF.
