The area is characterized by a relatively gentle environment and scarce vegetation cover and houses the one and only known station of Euphorbia gibelliana, an endemic species of Piedmont with an extremely limited distribution area. It is a typically mountain perennial heliophilous species living in thin woods consisting of lime-trees, birches, and downy oaks. The area is populated by the typical alpine fauna, represented by mammals and several rodents and species belonging to the genus Microtus, besides common hare, weasel, polecat, badger, and fox. The access is not allowed, except on 5th August of every year, the celebration day of Madonna della Neve, to which the homonymous chapel on Mt. Sap is dedicated. In the other periods of the year, it is possible to access the area for research reasons, with an authorization issued by the Park Authority. |
