This area is characterized by a limited edge of messinian evaporites with karstic phenomena and a surrounding relic forest. The vegetation is mainly composed of forest plants, secondary prairies which are very different according to the substratum, and of shrubby lands restoring the forest surface. This area hosts plant species of particular rarity for the Region: Staphylea pinnata, Phyllitis scolopendrium, Polypodium australe, etc… The karstic system of the Onferno cave is one of the most important regional sites as far as the presence of troglofaunal insects and bats is concerned.
