Historical-artistic development of Sacro Monte
Sacro Monte was created, at the end of the 15th century, after the will of the Observant Franciscan Friar Padre Bernardino Caimi, who had been the keeper of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem in 1478 and wanted to reproduce the holy places of Palestine on the hill dominating Varallo.
Sacro Monte of the origins
Sacro Monte was created, at the end of the 15th century, after the will of the Observant Franciscan Friar Bernardino Caimi, who had been the keeper of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem in 1478 and wanted to reproduce the holy places of Palestine on the hill dominating Varallo to give pilgrims the opportunity of an easier and more comfortable visit. In these places, images, paintings, and sculptures reminded to the believers the event of the life of Christ taking place there, favoring meditation and prayer.
Sacro Monte of the origins
Sacro Monte di Varallo is the most ancient Sacro Monte in Piedmont and Lombardy and is the only one maintaining the combination of two features: the "urban" aspect, with the historical walls and the two squares, Piazza dei Tribunali and Piazza della Basilica, and the charming procession route developing at direct contact with nature, almost a big country via crucis developing on the hill.
