Leaving from Enna, you will get to Leonforte by taking SS road 121;
then, out of the town, turn left at the junction and follow the
indications to Nicosia by taking SS road 117. Go ahead on the left
towards Mistretta: after 29 km, turn left and follow a dirt road for
about one hundred meters. Go ahead on foot, and you will find clear
indications on the possible itineraries.
The most significant
feature of the reserve is represented without a doubt by the presence
of a rich beech tree wood in the upper part of the so-called Bosco
della Giumenta, on the summit of Mt. Sambuchetti, developing from
1,350-1,400 m above sea level. It is the relict of a beech tree wood
originating during the glacial period, in which the range of
distribution of the plant reaches its southernmost limit: that is, in
the south of Sambuchetti there are no beech trees. Since this beech
tree wood is no longer managed by man, it is characterized by very
ancient specimens.

The beech tree is a marvellous tree characterizing in Sicily above all
the forest of Nebrodi, even if it can be found also on Madonie and Etna.
It
started growing in our region during the last glaciation and, since it
is a demanding plant from an ecological point of view, when the warm
climate came back, it survived in the northern area and at high
altitudes.

The Sicilian Marsh Tit is an endemic small bird characterizing the area of Nebrodi, from which this reserve lies not very far.
Unlike
the Marsh Tit, the Sicilian Marsh Tit has a clearer plumage. Up to 11
cm long, it has a short and stumpy beak suitable to break small seeds
and berries or to capture some insect or small worms.
