The Nature Reserve is in the province of Asti, on the right bank of the Tanaro River, upstream from the city and in the river’s alluvial plain. Among the species to be preserved are the Lycaena dispar butterfly (or large copper), whereas among the amphibians there are the endangered common spadefoot, the Triturus carnifex newt (or Italian crested newt) and the Bufo viridis toad (or European green toad). The area is also important from a palaeontological point of view, following the discovery of a fossilised dolphin in 2003. The find is now on display in the Asti Paleontological Museum.
