100 Ways to Discover the Reserve Workshops to "Learn
by Doing"
|
|
Thematic weekends in Riserva Naturale Zompo lo Schioppo
Every year, the Reserve suggests a rich calendar of events with scientific meetings, tours and initiatives linked to local traditions. In spring we rediscover the profession of the coalman through the preparation and lighting of a real charcoal pile, summer is welcomed with the day dedicated to sheep rearing in Rendinara, a town situated under the slopes of mt. Pizzo Deta, in August workshops and theater performances in Morino Vecchio, in autumn the "Roscetta" chestnut is the protagonist of the festival "Saperi e sapori del bosco", while in winter we celebrate Christmas in Breccioso with the opening of the canteens of the small town to discover an itinerary dedicated to enology and gastronomy. The activities will be held in the territory of the Reserve, and also include tours in the open air, with different difficulty levels according to the specific needs of the participants.
The subscriptions to the weekends will be open until the week before the initiative.

Natural Braids
Braiding baskets and hampers is one of the most ancient human activities, more ancient than ceramics and weaving. Through manual activities, the participants will transform simple branches in baskets of different shapes and size. They will learn to recognize the various plants to use and their diversity, the gathering method respecting the lunar phases.
Program
- 1st day
- Morning: Meeting of the participants in the Reserve Visitor Center. Visit to the Ecomuseum, accommodation in the mountain hut "Lo Schioppo" or in the Hotel - Restaurant "Lo Schioppo". Lunch.
- Afternoon: Presentation of the program and of the material to build baskets. Demonstration of the technique and beginning of the workshop.
- 2nd day
- Morning: Tour along the trail which, across charming cliffs, leads to the Hermitage of Cauto. Visit to the Hermitage. Picnic.
- Afternoon: Building of a wicker basket.
- 3rd day
- Morning: Tour along the nature trail, to discover the natural waterfall. Departure of the participants.

Paper Manufacturing
Paper is one of the most ancient and versatile natural materials. A support for writing and an instrument for decoration, it can be used in various ways. White, colored, decorated, we see (and touch) paper every day, but rarely we ask how it is made. The participants will be introduced to paper manufacturing, starting from pulp processing to the dyeing with natural pigments. The weekend will end with the creation of a small notebook, as a souvenir of the experience.

- Morning: Meeting of the participants in the Reserve Visitor Center. Visit to the Ecomuseum, accommodation in the mountain hut "Lo Schioppo" or in the Hotel - Restaurant "Lo Schioppo". Lunch.
- Afternoon: Short introduction to paper manufacturing. Demonstration of the pulp processing and draught of a sheet. Stapling of a small filigree within the sewing frame.
- 2nd day
- Morning: Tour along the nature trail, to discover the natural waterfall. Walk to gather possible dying plants for the dyeing of paper. Picnic.
- Afternoon: Creation of white and colored sheets of paper. Experimentation of sheets of paper with more colors and different techniques.
- 3rd day
- Morning: presentation of the various binding techniques and binding of a notebook. Lunch. Departure of the participants.

Fragrances and Tastes
The herbs, besides having nourishing and cosmetic properties, also have medicinal virtues. For this reason, they play a very important role in the modern therapeutic treatments, not only in the field of natural medicine, but also in the field of officinal medicine and cosmetics. This activity aims at introducing participants to the vegetal world and to the discovery of the spontaneous plants present in the territory of the Reserve, with their features and practical uses.

- 1st day
- Morning: Meeting of the participants in the Reserve Visitor Center. Visit to the Ecomuseum, accommodation in the mountain hut "Lo Schioppo" or in the Hotel - Restaurant "Lo Schioppo". Lunch.
- Afternoon: tour looking for officinal and aromatic plants, with explanations by a naturopath and introduction to the wildlife of the Reserve. After dinner, we will prepare herb teas to drink and listen to the singing of the nocturnal birds of prey.
- 2nd day
- Morning: Tour along the trail which, across charming cliffs, leads to the Hermitage of Cauto. Visit to the Hermitage, search for aromatic herbs. Picnic.
- Afternoon: Techniques of conservation and drying of the gathered plants.
- 3rd day
- Morning: Tour along the nature trail, to discover the natural waterfall. Departure of the participants.

Dyeing Herbs
The aim of the workshop is to rediscover the ancient dyeing techniques, by using the herbs that can be found in the territory of the Reserve, to give to the works the ancient taste of the natural and craftsman processing.

- Afternoon: Crumbling and mincing of the gathered plants. Preparation of dyeing teas. Mordanting of the supports to dye (paper, cotton cloths, skeins of wool).
- 2nd day
- Morning: Dyeing and cleaning of the dyed cloths. Lunch.
- Afternoon: Extraction of other dyeing essences from common plants. Outlines on possible kinds of dyeing. Departure of the participants.

The World of Bees and the Products of the Beehive
In bees there are solidarity, cooperation, and love for the new born, industriousness and respect towards the authorities and the rules. The proposal aims at making participants discover the fascinating world of bees, through the use of a transparent beehive and thematic slides: in this way, we will try to discover that the bee is an irreplaceable insect for agriculture and environment, we will present apiculture techniques and illustrate the flowers providing pollen and nectar.

- Morning: Meeting of the participants in the Reserve Visitor Center. Visit to the Ecomuseum, accommodation in the mountain hut "Lo Schioppo" or in the Hotel - Restaurant "Lo Schioppo". Lunch.
- Afternoon: Presentation of the program and short explanation of the history of apiculture, description of the beehive, and tools of the apiculture.
- 2nd day
- Morning: Tour along the trail which, across charming cliffs, leads to the Hermitage of Cauto. Visit to the Hermitage. Walk to discover the raw materials for the production of honey. Picnic.
- Afternoon: Production of wax candles.
- 3rd day
- Morning: Tour along the nature trail, to discover the natural waterfall. Departure of the participants.

Day Dedicated to Sheep Rearing
Sheep rearing has been for a long time the main economic activity of Abruzzi, it has changed the natural landscape, the social relationships, the local culture and traditions. This experience aims at rediscovering this ancient profession, promoting the local traditions and quality products. The participants, together with the shepherds from Rendinara, will experience all the stages of cheese processing, from milking to cheese and ricotta cheese processing.

One Hundred Hands
An anthropological and sensory approach to discover the life in the Reserve, its people and hands, hands that have shaped the landscape, feeling and moving, tilling the land and shaping the natural elements. The program invites the participants to develop their manual skills by processing the natural elements present in the territory to create tools as a souvenir of the experience.

Braiding baskets and hampers is one of the most ancient human activities, more ancient than ceramics and weaving. Through manual activities, the participants will transform simple branches in baskets of different shapes and size. They will learn to recognize the various plants to use and their diversity, the gathering method respecting the lunar phases.

- Morning: Meeting of the participants in the Reserve Visitor Center. Visit to the Ecomuseum, accommodation in the mountain hut "Lo Schioppo" or in the Hotel - Restaurant "Lo Schioppo". Lunch.
- Afternoon: Presentation of the program and of the material to build baskets. Demonstration of the technique to build wicker baskets and beginning of the workshop.
- 2nd day
- Morning: Tour along the nature trail, to discover the natural waterfall. Building of a wicker basket. Picnic.
- Afternoon: Finishing of the handicraft. Departure of the participants.

Paper Manufacturing
Paper is one of the most ancient and versatile natural materials. A support for writing and an instrument for decoration, it can be used in various ways. White, colored, decorated, we see (and touch) paper every day, but rarely we ask how it is made. The participants will be introduced to paper manufacturing, starting from pulp processing to the dyeing with natural pigments.

- Morning: Meeting of the participants in the Reserve Visitor Center. Visit to the Ecomuseum, accommodation in the mountain hut "Lo Schioppo" or in the Hotel - Restaurant "Lo Schioppo". Lunch.
- Afternoon: Short introduction to paper manufacturing. Demonstration of the pulp processing and draught of a sheet. Stapling of a small filigree within the sewing frame.
- 2nd day
- Morning: Tour along the nature trail, to discover the natural waterfall. Walk to gather possible dying plants for the dyeing of paper. Boiling of the plants for paper dyeing. Picnic .
- Afternoon: Creation of white and colored sheets of paper. Experimentation of sheets of paper with more colors and different techniques. Departure of the participants.

Dyeing Herbs
The aim of the workshop is to rediscover the ancient dyeing techniques, by using the herbs that can be found in the territory of the Reserve, to give to the works the ancient taste of the natural and craftsman processing.

- Morning: Dyeing and cleaning of the dyed cloths. Lunch.
- Afternoon: Extraction of other dyeing essences from common plants. Outlines on possible kinds of dyeing. Departure of the participants.

The World of Bees and the Products of the Beehive
In bees there are solidarity, cooperation, and love for the new born, industriousness and respect towards the authorities and the rules. The proposal aims at making participants discover the fascinating world of bees, through the use of a transparent beehive and thematic slides: in this way, we will try to discover that the bee is an irreplaceable insect for agriculture and environment, we will present apiculture techniques and illustrate the flowers providing pollen and nectar.

An anthropological and sensory approach to discover the life in the Reserve, its people and hands, hands that have shaped the landscape, feeling and moving, tilling the land and shaping the natural elements. The program invites the participants to develop their manual skills by processing the natural elements present in the territory to create tools as a souvenir of the experience.

- Morning: Meeting of the participants in the Reserve Visitor Center. Visit to the Ecomuseum, accommodation in the mountain hut "Lo Schioppo" or in the Hotel - Restaurant "Lo Schioppo". Lunch.
- Afternoon: Presentation of the program and walk to look for the materials necessary to create the objects (mats, necklaces, bracelets, collages, etc).
- 2nd day
- Morning: Tour along the nature trail, to discover the natural waterfall. Demonstration of the various techniques to create the handicrafts. Picnic.
- Afternoon: Building of small objects. Departure of the participants.
