Protected Areas in Cyprus
In Cyprus the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment is responsible for the implementation of government policy in the fields of agriculture, breeding, natural resources, and environment.
As a matter of fact, the Ministry consists of several departments, among which there is the Environment Service. Cyprus environmental policy has been recently revised from its foundations, as a result of the process of harmonization with the European Union, process which has been undertaken by the Environment Service.
The Environment Service deals with issues of environmental policy and coordinates plans and programmes regarding the environment. It ensures policy enforcement and the co-ordination of the process for the adoption of the European policy and legislation on the environment. It chairs the Committee for the Assessment of the Environmental Impacts from Projects. It promotes, inter alia, the laws regarding the Control of the Pollution of Waters and on the Management of Solid and Hazardous Waste. It also encourages environmental education and the publication of environmental information. The Service also represents the administrative arm of the Council for the Environment.
