The park's most outstanding features are the over 200 lakes (the estanys), the impressive crags of "Els Encantats" and the mountain meanders (aigüestortes). A true paradise for nature lovers: lakes, streams, waterfalls, mires, screes, steep mountain tops and lush woods of black pine, fir, beech, Scots pine and birch represent the habitat of several alpine or nordic plant and animal species.
The park is an example of Pyrenaic high-mountain ecosystem, where the effects of the glaciers of the Quaternary can easily be observed. Capercaillies, black woodpeckers, lammergeiers and chamois live among its lakes and mountains; fir, pine and beech woods cover the park territory; gentians, ranunculus, lilies, orchids and primulas grow on the alpine meadows.
