The ZSC Monti Auernig e Corona plays a particularly important role in the Natura 2000 network of Friuli Venezia Giulia because it is rich in habitats and flora, due to the coexistence of different substrates and to the particular abundance of transitional bog systems. It does not present plant species of community interest, but within it there are the only certain Italian points of Wulfenia carinthiaca, an Illyrian species that has its distribution area on this site in Italy. In this area there are also some regional populations of black grouse (Tetrao tetrix) and it serves as an important point of ecological connection between the ZPS "Alpi carniche" in the west and the ZSC "Vallone di Rio Bianco e Malborghetto" in the east.
