The ZPS Alpi Carniche plays an important role in the Natura 2000 network of Friuli Venezia Giulia, due to its high extent and therefore to its high number of endalpic and mesalpic habitats and species. It presents ecosystems both linked to calcareous and siliceous substrates, determining its high flora biodiversity as well as the presence of rare of borderline species. As it concerns its fauna, the site hosts a population of rock ptarmigans (Lagopus mutus), about 20/30 couples of absolute importance at regional level; it represents also a core area for the black grouse (Tetrao tetrix) and presents environmental situations suitable for species such as the golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), the brown bear (Ursus arctos), the Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx), playing thus a significant role in the regional network. It makes a significant contribution for some forest species such as the Eurasian pygmy owl (Glaucidium passerinum), the Boreal owl (Aegolius funereus), the grey-headed woodpecker (Picus canus), and the Eurasian three-toed woodpecker (Pycoides tridactylus).
