The Porta lake is the most northern coastal wetland in Tuscany. Part of this area survived after the drainages and today it is characterized by a wide cane thicket with canals (one of the widest in Tuscany) and surrounded by a wet forest. The water supply is guaranteed by springs situated at the foot of the hills at the back called "Rupi di Porta". Thanks to its many different environments it is possible to spot about a hundred bird species during the year, but this area's significance is also connected to the presence of amphibians, reptiles, fishes, insects, and also ecologically specialized plant species.
