This swamp area, together with the Montignoso Protected Area and part of the Porta cliffs, represents a unique environment: on this limestone hills the maquis and other rare local species such as the Euphorbia dendroides grow.
At the foot of the cliffs and near the Lake's springs there is the Medici's Tower, which was part of a fortification built by the House of Medici from Florence between 1568 and 1588: at that time it was a strategic point to control the road network.
