At an altitude of 1,817 meters, the lake is the highest of the Apennine and occupies a small depression, originating from the phenomenon of the doubling of the ridges, on the side of the rounded peak of Mount Capolino. Exposed to weather currents that can cause sudden showers, according to a popular belief, also narrated by Bocaccio, it is enough to throw a stone in the lake to trigger an immediate storm.
