The museum was set up in 1990 when about 100 taxidermied animals were acquired by the Municipality. It was later supplemented by the entomological collection donated to the Municipality by Dr Vittorio Aliquo' and by some archaeological finds from the site of the Abbey of San Giorgio. The Museum is currently being reorganised while waiting to be moved to its new headquarters, which will soon be completed.
The museum, which is nearing completion, consists of collections of taxidermied animals, an entomological collection of minerals, fossils and archaeological finds, and an ethno-anthropological section.
