The Capriola Valley

A spectacular view of the Abruzzo Park between caves and monumental trees.

Sunday 6 April 2025

The Vallone della Capriola A spectacular view of the Abruzzo Park between caves and monumental trees. The Vallone della Capriola is a steep rocky gorge, a natural route connecting the Alto Sangro Valley and the vast plateau that develops at high altitude between the slopes of Monte Greco, the Toppe del Tesoro and the Chiarano valley. With this excursion we will reach the beginning of the gorge up to the small Grotta della Capriola, the first of the various caves that the swirling force of the waters of an ancient glacial river has carved into the rock, used in recent times as a pastoral shelter and war shelter. Leaving the gorge behind, we will move to the Monumental Beech "Methuselah", a silent witness of the passage of time and a symbol of strength, resilience and beauty, and then descend to the valley among pastures and ancient mountain fountains.

The route in its entirety offers truly spectacular views of much of the Abruzzo National Park, ranging from Monte Marsicano to Camosciara and the entire Meta-Mainarde mountain range and the right glance to tell the evolutionary history of the territory through a careful reading of the landscape.
