Monte Mattone, the southern peak of Montagna di Godi, rises steeply above the town of Villetta Barrea. The slopes of the mountain are covered by a beautiful beech forest which, on the southern side, is replaced by the magnificent Zappini Pine Forest consisting of Italian black pine, called Villetta Barrea, relict and located only in some areas of the Abruzzo and Majella National Park. The presence of this evergreen conifer forest creates a beautiful contrast with the colors that the dominant beech forest takes on during the seasons, and the view of the valley below, with Lake Barrea and the peaks of Chiarano and the Mountains of Meta and Camosciara as a frame, is truly of exceptional and evocative beauty.
