A magnificent high altitude trek with exceptional views, with four peaks over 2000 and 18 km of walking.
Starting from Prati di Mezzo, at an altitude of 1428 m, we will climb along the Meta valley until reaching Passo dei Monaci at an altitude of 1967 m above sea level. Here, in a south-westerly direction, the Mainarde mountain range begins, the border between the regions of Molise and Lazio. We will begin to follow the ridge line touching the four peaks of Metuccia (2015 m), Monte a Mare, the highest point of our trek (2160 m), Coste dell'Altare (2075 m) and Cappello del Prete (2013 m). From here the steep slope will lead us to the Valico della Tagliola and then into the beautiful Valle Venafrana, which we will climb up to the Passo della Crocetta and then gently finish the return, crossing the Fonte Fredda spring, at the foot of Monte Cavallo, Forcellone and Predicopeglia until returning to Prati di Mezzo.
A historic group of chamois inhabit these peaks and with a bit of luck we will be able to spot them, but the most peculiar charm of this route is in the landscape and in the very particular light that highlights valleys and slopes in a unique way. The view, very vast, ranges from the Gran Sasso to the north to Vesuvius to the south and the wealth of history, from sheep farming, to brigandage to the battles of the Second World War, allows us to learn little-known stories and events of our past.
