In the early years of its history, Grumentum must certainly have had a purely military function: located along a route of vital importance for the control of the region and trade between the Ionian and Tyrrhenian Magna Graecia colonies and the indigenous world of the interior, Grumentum had to bear the brunt of wars and devastation several times, from the struggles between the Romans and Lucanians for control of the region, to the Hannibal war, and the social wars.
